Season 1, Episode 4 of 6. Previously: the edit started on the tools the team already knew.

Somewhere in every production right now there’s a conversation about AI.

It rarely happens in a meeting with an agenda. It happens in the edit bay at eleven at night, or in a message thread between a producer and a VFX lead. And it’s rarely about whether to use AI. Most people already do, in some form. The real question is harder.

Does using it mean giving up the way you work? And the judgment that makes you good?

Why the question feels so heavy

AI arrived in this industry as two stories at once. One says everything is about to be automated. The other says none of it is good enough to matter. Both are loud, and neither is useful to someone trying to finish a cut by Friday.

Underneath the noise there’s a real fear, and it deserves to be taken seriously. Craft takes years to build. If a tool can approximate in seconds what took a decade to learn, people reasonably ask what that means for them, their team and their rates.

Pretending that fear isn’t there doesn’t help anyone. I wrote about this earlier in The Hype Is Over.

Where we stand

Here is our position, stated plainly.

Traditional, hybrid and AI-assisted are all legitimate ways to work. A studio that never touches AI is not behind. A studio that uses it everywhere is not cutting corners. Most will land somewhere in between, and that place will move from project to project.

Whatever the mix, the artist keeps responsibility. Creative judgment, refinement and delivery belong to people. AI can widen the options and remove drudgery. It does not decide what is good.

A platform shouldn’t make the choice for you. The worst outcome is a studio rebuilding its whole pipeline every time a new model ships, or being locked into one vendor’s idea of how AI should be used. Your environment should let you bring in new tools, including the new ones, without disrupting how your studio runs.

What that looks like in practice

VFX artist Andras Kavalecz talks about this in his Real World Stories episode on CREE8.TV: why creativity will always matter more than the latest AI tool. What changes, in his telling, is how fast a good idea can move from one artist’s head to a finished frame, and how many people around the world can work on it together.

That’s the role of infrastructure in this moment. Not to pick a side in the AI debate, but to make sure whatever tools you choose sit inside an environment you control, with your media, your access rules and your people.

The honest part

We don’t know exactly where this goes, and neither does anyone else. Anyone offering certainty about AI in production is guessing. What we do know is that studios that keep control of their own workflow will be able to adapt as the tools change. Studios that hand that control away will be rebuilding again and again.

Next week, Episode 5: Scaling up. One production becomes fifty-five.
